Lack Of Creativity

We don't need creativity. Stewart wouldn't have changed a thing yesterday. What we need is a striker to stretch the defence and take them away. Yesterday was simple for them, no movement upfront = compact defence/midfield = no space. All Loy had to do was take Wilson for a walk, opens up 20 yards of space. Williams seems more than able to exploit.

Who'd be a manager? Even on here we all see it differently.

Stewart's (or a player like him) ability to take men on (something Williams struggled with yesterday) and hold the ball would have created space for Loy (or whoever was alongside him) to use.

Loy's movement is good when he's in a front pairing (some of Hemming goals last season were made possible by Loy taking defenders away) but he looks lost as the sole target.

We may already have the solution in El Bak. For me he's more of a Stewart than he is a Hemmings. What struck me was that out of our frontmen, Yordi was the guy capable of ploughing the lone furrow up front, battering players about and using his size to hold up the ball, while Loy alongside El Bak may well have been a good option. However Yordi and El Bal are young and inexperienced, so I understand PH not wanting to start them against Rangers in front of nearly 10,000, with or without Loy.

Agreed, we looked short of ideas. Plenty of running around, but no plan and no creativity. But then, we've just sold Stewart and let Jeebsy go......still can't fathom than one. We still have one or two pretty positive creative players in the squad (Wighton, Williams, Duffy, Ross even?) but no-one of Stewart's level. Williams looks like he has a decent delivery at corners and free kicks, but we need someone who's going to scare defenders. Maybe El Bakhtaoui, but it's too early to tell. I suspect that the SPL will be a big step up for him. Loy is a poacher, not an out and out striker who'll take defenders on as Hemmings did. He doesn't make his own chances, and doesn't seem to make decent runs to find space either. Yordi looks a out of his depth, and I won't be surprised if he's off-loaded pretty sharpish. Hopefully we'll add to the squad before the window closes, because from what I've seen and read we'll struggle to create chances let alone find the back of the net as Hemmings and Stewart did last year. Without them, where would we have finished?

As much as losing Stewart & GGH has taken away some of our creativity, it was the lack of movement which killed us on Saturday. Too many of the lads were very static and didn't seem willing to make runs and give the player in possession an out ball, Loy being the main culprit. If you're going to play the lone striker role, you have to be willing to put in the running and find the gaps.

Far too many times Williams, O'Hara and Gowser were in possession but had to double back as there was no pass on.

Surely the manager must have known before Saturday that Loy wasn't suited to playing as an isolated lone frontman.

Lionel Messi would be no use as a target man. If he was played in that role he'd be ineffective and it would be the manager's fault rather than the player's.

Most folk seem to be criticising Loy for not being Hemmings, which makes no sense to me. Either Hartley needs to sign another player to play that role or he needs to use another system.

He went with the same team vs county so maybe figured they deserved the shirts. I agree though that loy should have a partner in attack.

I actually agree that Loy isn't suited to the lone striker role, but that was the role he was asked to play and to me he just didn't put in the effort required. In saying that though, Hartley should know Loy well enough by now and probably not played him in that role.

All last week I was all for sticking with the same XI and the same system as I felt it'd work a treat against a Rangers side with Barton & Kranjcar in the middle. Those two aren't blessed with pace, the thing that is Rangers' most dangerous attribute. Thought we would've handled them no problem, right up until I saw their line-up, no Kranjcar with Forrester & Rossiter draughted in. They flooded the midfield and added pace to their line-up, something that Hartley probably should've countered earlier than he did.

Of course we need creativity. Especially against the better sides. Stewart could have easily made the difference on Saturday.
