Dundee’s Eilish McColgan has qualified for the Women’s 5000 metres final at the Olympics in Rio.

The 25-year-old finished fifth in her semi-final this afternoon meaning she will line up against the best in the world in the chase for medals in the early hours of Sunday morning.

She finished in 15 minutes 18 seconds.

Her performances vindicates her decision to switch from the 3000m steeplechase.

She ran in that during London 2012 but failed to make the final.

Eilish’s mum Liz couldn’t hide her delight on social media.

The former Olympic silver medalist tweeted:

Just brilliant Eilish automatic qualifier proud proud proud ????????
