Dundee Vs "them" Skol Cup Match 2/9/1987

Stll the greatest match I attended in my lifetime.Such a shame that as far as im aware there is no footage from this match?

The things which made it so special apart from the result obviously were:

The crowd.     I think we were in the ground at least an hour before kick off to get my then usual seat in the back of The Provy Rd enclosure.(At that point The Derry was near full) and the fans were still streaming in at the Provy all the 1st half up until half time.

The noise....even though we lost an early goal-the backing was immense!

TC's goal to make it 1-1.....The roar when that goal went in was simply awesome.(especially as a chance had been missed a few minutes previously and we thought that was it!)

Keith Wright running in on the keeper in extra time and blasting the ball past him and the elation of the ball hitting the net  I will always remember plus one of best rumbas/scrums ever at the seated Dens Park which saw me finish several rows down from the back!

The final whistle!!.......after the disappointment of 1980 and the horror of 83 at last we had beat them!! (something that I personally didn't see very often)

The songs at the end.......The jubilation went on for ages after the match had finished.

In fact im sure we wanted the team to come out again to take a bow?

The next days Courier (which I still have) with the Quote "The night sky was split asunder with the roar that followed"

Best atmosphere ever and what made it extra special was the fact that in that 20,000 crowd we had a full Derry,Provy Rd plus the usual areas (at that time) in the main stand and the police had to create an area in the stand enclosure to accommodate the overspill of our fans to get in.

What a night that was!

Have to agree with you, by far the best match I have ever been to at Dens. It had everything, crowd, atmosphere and above all the result to match. Its strange there is no footage available though.

Maybe there was "Club footage" but certainly no BBC or Grampian  coverage. This match to me was like the last game of last season plus the Raith Rovers "McCann goal" game mixed together for emotion and atmosphere and multiplied by 10!!!

Provy and the Derry were immense that night.A truly epic experience!

  • Loved it that night...up in bus with Edinburgh lads, Duffy was immense and when we equalised it was obvious the Dabs had fear in their eyes.

Real shame Duffy had his career denting injury and missed the semi v a good Dons side - huge Dee support for that at the Dump. I was in Toronto and had to call the local Star paper for the score.....the guy told me right away...he was an exiled Scot!

For a great crowd the Scottish cup replay against Hibs after a 3 each draw at Easter road takes some beating

Now that one I was at. 18th March 1974 in front of a 30,000 plus crowd Dens was absolutely jumping and I couldn't breathe for the fag smoke.

We beat Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibs in the Scottish Cup that season before getting the ultimate semi final bogey team (as Celtic were at that time for us). Had we beat Celtic in the semi, we'd have had them across the road in the final. As it is Celtic absolutely destroyed them 3-0.

Best Dundee team I ever saw, just a pity Celtic were really strong at the same time.

Couldna get in Derry that night, stood in bit between it and provy.Mind Dabs were all over us for about an hour, but we held it at 0-1,mate had enough and p*ssed off back to pub, fanny, that's when the game started to turn. Then the place went radio, first Coyne, then with time running out Keith tore Fairy and the cheat a new one and rammed it up 'em.Couldnae speak when final whistle sounded we sang so loud!Brilliant night!!

Was in the Main Stand with my old man (Highstander now), so glad I took him that night as he'd not been going regularly for years and to watch his reactions at full time was very special, never will forget that.
