Liam Kennedy: I’m leaving but the memories live on

Recommended Posts

This is the final time you will read my musings on all things Dundee and Dundee United. Don’t all celebrate at once, please.

Having done my stint of four years at Tele HQ I’m offski. Pastures new are calling and Premier League football with the Sunderland Echo. Yes, you did read that right — Sunderland.

And before you all start, I’m a Geordie, yes, but, first and foremost, a football fan. And, in my defence, I haven’t supported a club I’ve covered yet, despite the protestations of many an Arab on social media.

During my time in the City of Discovery, there have been some highs — United’s cup final trips, the derby days, and Dundee’s promotion back to the top flight.

Jackie McNamara’s United were the best team in the country for a very short period. Quite simply it was a joy to watch them week-in, week-out.

Dundee have had their moments, also. Helicopter Saturday was a highlight, so, too, was the Doon Derby, just for the pure drama of the occasion.

There have also been some lows, too. Sadly, in my time here, I’ve seen both clubs relegated.

There have been characters along the way, none more so than John Brown at Dens Park. What a boy he was, the stories he would tell could never be repeated.

I remember once asking him if I could do a life story, as I thought he’d have so many tales to tell. The terse answer, spoken in his low, Glaswegian tone out the side of his mouth was simple, “I’ve got too many skeletons in my closet for that sort of thing, son.”

All in all, I’ve loved my time in this fantastic city. I’m sad to be leaving. Even more sad to depart with United floundering in the second tier.

I’ve loved the banter with the lads on Twitter. Loved the boys on the Dundee press beat, I’ve even learned to enjoy lead football writer Tom Duthie’s company, although that was hard work. The dressing-rooms on both sides of Tannadice Street have graced some quality players and class lads to boot.

The Peter MacDonalds, Kane Hemmings, Greg Stewarts, Kevin Thomsons and Stevie Campbells of this world.

Put simply, this city, which has football at its very heart, just like my own, deserves to have two clubs thriving in the upper echelons of the Scottish game. This place just isn’t quite the same without it.

Never got the obsession from a lot of our supporters on Liam Kennedys writings to be honest.

He was only a local sports desk reporter doing his job.

Some Dee's think DCT are biased towards the Dabs and likewise, many Dabs feel DCT have dark blue leanings. The truth is neither. They just report on what they can find out or speculate on. In my view, that's exactly what Liam done.

Good luck to him. He's off to work for the Sundelrand Echo so I might bump into him down here at some stage.
