They Played For Dundee And Aberdeen: Scott Bain

Recommended Posts

It is hard to believe that Scott Bain is just only 24 as he seems to have been around in the football world a lot longer than his years suggest. Keepers tend to mature a lot older in their career, but Bain seems to be bucking that trend with the fact that he has been called up to the Scottish squad last year by another Dundee and Aberdeen great, Gordon Strachan. Unfortunately Scott had to drop out due to injury.

Aberdeen

Scott Bain signed for Aberdeen in 2010 when he was just a teenager.  After starting his Aberdeen career he was loaned out to Elgin city for 11 games and was then released by the Dons club in May 2011. Scott Bain has always stated that his Dons rejection is something that has always fired him up throughout his career and pushed him towards full-time football. Interesting to note that Scott was trained and mentored by another Aberdeen and Dee great, Jim Leighton, with Aberdeen and then with the Scottish under 20's.

Alloa Athletic

Scott Bain 3 web.jpgBain signed for third division side Alloa Athletic on the 9th June 2011 (Along with Ben Gordon, Ryan McCord and Kevin Cawley) by none other than Paul Hartley (Another former Aberdeen Player). He quickly established and earned himself the number one jersey and a reputation as a very good keeper.

In August 2013, Alloa nearly caused a cup upset when they held Aberdeen to a draw over the 120 minutes. Bain played his part at keeping a clean sheet, including tipping a good volley from midfielder Pawlett. However, it wasn't to be, Aberdeen won 6-5 on penalties and it took another ex-Dee Jamie Langfield to save a Doyle spot kick which took the Dons into the next round of the cup.

Paul Hartley and a young 19 year old Scott Bain helped the Wasps go from a 3rd division outfit, to playing in division one in a matter of two seasons. Bain managed to get 100 games under his belt during his time at Alloa.

Over the course at his time with the part-time outfit, Bain would work full-time grafting on a building site and then spend the evening training with the club. Reflecting on this he stated: “When I was getting up early and grafting on a building site, then going to training at night, it was a slog". However, it was this hard work that prepared him for life in full-time football.

Scott was called up for Scotland u20's for a friendly against Belgium in 2013. This meant he had to take two days off his work in Edinburgh, however never got a chance to play in the 1 - 0 defeat and was back to his 'normal' job the day after.

Dundee FC

VNeFdV2D.jpgBain signed a 3 year deal for Dundee on the 29th May 2014 (on the same day as Kevin Thomson) as back up to Kyle Letheren. “I am over the moon about joining Dundee. It has been a lot of hard work over the last three years but it has paid off." he said.

Bain didn't have to wait long before being handed his first game. His debut was against Raith Rovers in the league cup which Dundee won 4 - 0. Ironically, only Bain and McPake (Of Paul Hartley's signings remain in the team today).

In October 2014, Scott made his first league appearance for the club against Motherwell after Kyle Letheren was injured in the warm up. Dundee won that game 1 - 3, however it was Gary Harkins who stole the show with a double and a celebration WWE style.

Some of Bain's best saves have come against his former club Aberdeen. Dundee won the Scottish Cup fourth round 2-1 at Dens in 2014 thanks to some excellent goalkeeping by Bain. A one handed palm away from a Adam Rooney header in the first half and a two handed save to put the ball out for a corner from a Johnny Hayes free-kick behind the wall.

However, after David Clarkson scored his historical 8th goal to put the Dee into a 2-1 lead, Scott Bain was called into action at the other end of the park to keep the Dark Blues in the match. Bain stayed his line and palmed a Hayes close range thunderbolt onto the bar, the ball then bounced on to the goal line and was then eventually cleared to a sigh of relief from every Dee in Dens Park. This save put Dundee through into the next round of the cup and you could tell how much this meant to Bain.............. due to the big the smile on his face.

Scott Bain services were again called into action against the Arabs in August 2015. Dundee were down 2-1 and the Arabs were looking for number 3. Simon Murray's injury time shot looked goal bound, and had the Arab support were off their feet thinking this was goal number three. But somehow Bain managed to get his fingertips onto the ball, which then bounced back off the underside of the bar and he again kept us in the match. The Dark Blues equalized in the dying few minutes of the game, thanks to a Gary Harkins shot which was fumbled by the United Keeper, James McPake was quickest to react and scored with just 30 seconds left on the clock. The rest they say... is now history.

Bain's lowest point in a Dark Blue jersey probably was against the Arabs. Sent packing by Steven McLean after being judged to have fouled Billy McKay in a goal scoring opportunity. Taking the long walk back to the dressing room, he was consoled by goal scorer Kane Hemmings and the Dundee support. McKay scored from the spot kick to put united back into the game. While it must be said that Mitchell performed really well on his league debut, made some excellent saves, but there was nothing he could do to stop the Arabs scoring their second goal. That day, the Dark Blues had to contend with a point after dominating most of the match.

Bain was voted Dundee player of the year 2014-15.

Scotland

A International call-up to the Scottish National team against  Qatar and Ireland in May 2015, but unfortunately didn't play in either of the games. Bain was again called up for international duty in May 2016 for friendlies against France and Italy, but an injury forced him to pull out.
