Doing very well on 14 points. Why are we so far behind when we are a bigger club? #fail

Doing it in spite of  "footballing dinosaur" at the helm as well

Been doing very well for a number of years, on and off the park.

This is St Johnstone's eighth year in the top flight. They finished 8th in their first two seasons then 6th, 4th, 6th, 4th and 4th. Slow, patient building eventually paid off for them.

Not sure what point there is in saying we've failed because we're behind them in the table after eight games anyway. Let's see where we are at the end of the season. The season before last we were 17 points behind Hamilton at the start of January and finished above them.

For a city/team/following of their size, I would call that truely outstanding.

What have they achieved in the cup competitions over the same period?.

They buy players who are effective in a simple 4-4-2.

Target man and a nippy partner. A passer and a ball winner at cm.

A quick centre half partnered with one who's good in the air.

2 wide players who can cross the ball backed up by 2 attacking fullbacks.

Every one works hard for the team.

Compare this with our narrow slow game and it isn't difficult to see why they are better.

And lets face it, they're hardly 'entertaining to watch' are they?

What Tommy Wright said a year ago...

"St Johnstone's success lies in continuity among the playing personnel.

"We do a lot of our work early in January, and re-signing players, we've been able to have a stable squad and one where you only need two or three players each season.

"We make sure in the summer we're not looking for six, seven, eight players."

Hartley was targeting the same kind of continuity at Dens for this season but the fact McGinn, Hemmings and Stewart all went down south for more money meant we've had to make too many changes and had a slow start to the season as a result.

I'd much rather be watching a Dundee team playing like saints than the boring, ineffective one than we are seeing right now.

Some of our players are sh**e and shouldn't be anywhere near Dens.

It p***es me off that I'll probably have to watch these guys for the next 3 years unless they get punted (unlikely) or I die of boredom watching them.

While I'll not say their our 'Hoffenheim', St. J have had the luxury of a wealthy fan owner for a long time who's built the club up (and moved the club to a new ground that generates revenue..) they've taken a while to find their groove. They're 5 years or so ahead of us as an established SPL club. We need to look to these clubs and look to emulate the 'good bits', not just them, County, ICT and dare I say, Hamilton. We're still very much a work in progress both on and off the field and while we've lost our 'creativity' from last year, I think PH has adapted the squad he had very well, we were never likely to score as many this year as last (although I thought we might have been a bit more prolific :() so he's set us up to defend better, fair enough we're not quite where we want to be yet but looking how tight the table is its not like we're cut adrift.....yet.
