A Dundee United fan who lost the plot at two Courier journalists covering the relegation derby at Dens Park last season has been given a community payback order.

Robert Cargill was furious after seeing his side demoted at the hands of rivals Dundee on May 2.

A late Craig Wighton goal sealed United’s fate

As he left the stadium Cargill spotted two of our journalists filming and interviewing nearby.

He stormed over and shouted threats at the pair before grabbing a lighting unit from a video camera and smashing it on the ground.

They had not even been trying to speak to Cargill when he lost his temper right in front of police officers.

A witness said: “He seemed pretty distraught about a football team being relegated … After he grabbed the light he threw it on the floor and smashed it.

“He then tussled with a security guard but not before threatening the pair of them.

“He was with his son at the time who was pretty upset when he realised his dad was getting lifted.”

Cargill, 47, of Balunie Crescent, pleaded guilty on summary complaint to a charge under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael imposed a community payback order with 60 hours of unpaid work to be completed in three months.

I'd imagine the guy was embarrassed by what he did, especially with his young son there...the police clearly had no option but to lift him when he broke the light, he'd likely have just received 'stern words' from them otherwise. He definitely seemed upset about DCT's 'biased' coverage of the Arabs situation. :o  Some community service hours is a sensible penalty & hopefully he's got the message. It's only a game, after all ;)
