We must cut out mistakes urges Dundee midfielder Vincent

Recommended Posts

Summer signing James Vincent has vowed he and his team-mates must cut out the errors that are proving costly to Dundee.

The central midfielder, who was signed from Inverness Caley at the end of last season, believes they have been creators of their own downfall in recent games against St Johnstone and Hearts.

“We see the goals we are losing as mistakes and, if we can cut them out, then I think we will be OK,” said the Englishman.

“It is frustrating when you are conceding goals down to mistakes rather than being cut open with good play.

“If the shape isn’t working, then maybe you look at that but that isn’t the case.

“We have spoken about it and it’s more that we are switching off at vital times and it is costing us dearly.”

Dundee play Partick Thistle tonight and Vinny knows how significant the game is.

“When you’re down at the bottom every game is vital, there is no other way of putting it.

“It has to be seen like that. The games are coming thick and fast and we’ve got a chance to put things right tonight.”

The Jags are on a similar run to Dundee in the league and sit just one point above the Dens Park men and James knows they are in for a difficult game again.

“Thistle are a good team and they are hard working.

“They will be good opposition but they are down there like us and they will be fighting for every ball as well.

“First and foremost, as long as every man in our team is working as hard as they can and matching up against their man, then I think the quality in our squad will shine through.

“The lads are still confident we can get results.”

The midfielder also knows his side’s performance after the break in the defeat to St Johnstone wasn’t good enough.

“The second half we seemed to come off the game.

“It’s not the standards we have set and not the way we have been playing the past few weeks.”

However, the former Caley player had felt confident going into the game against Saints after their display at Tynecastle.

“I’m disappointed with the outcome in Perth. I thought we could have got a result after the way we have been playing, especially against Hearts.

“We took a lot of positives in defeat in that game and were looking to carry that momentum and get a positive result.

“We had chances on Sunday and it was the same against Hearts.”

The last two games have seen the Dark Blues create chances but not taking them hasn’t helped their cause in picking up points.

James believes that if they’d hit the target, it might have given a totally different outlook on the team’s performance.

“If you put the ball in the back of the net we would be talking about a different story.

“It is what it is and sometimes you don’t get that bit of luck when you are sitting at the bottom.

“We know what we need to do.

“We need to get back to working hard first and foremost, taking our chances and get a result.”

In what has become a big game, for both the Dee and the Jags, that win has never been so keenly craved.

The game will not decide anything long term but a win will definitely take Dundee off the bottom of the league and above Thistle.
