Technically, Rugby Park is Kilmarnock’s fourth stadium since its incarnation in 1869.
Previously, Killie had played at The Grange, Holm Quarry and Ward's Park before making their move to Rugby Park in 1877. Though the name of the stadium has stayed the same, the pitch was moved a few streets down and a new stadium was constructed. This opened in 1899.
During the Second World War, the British Army took control of the stadium and used it as a fuel depot for the war effort. This resulted in large oil storages being stationed on the field and come the end of the war the ground was in dire need of repair.
German and Italian P.O.W.s would help to repair the terraces of the ground due to n compensation being offered for the state Rugby Park was left in.
After initially deciding that a move to another location was a better idea than bringing the current stadia up to after The Taylor Report was published in 1990, planning permission was rejected and it was then decided to upgrade Rugby Park to what we know today.
Construction on all three stands took just 348 days. The last game before construction took place in 1994 and the first after redevelopment was also against Rangers in 1995.
