  1. If You Use Email, Then You May Have Come Across Those 'i Am a Nigerian Prince' Scams and Believe It or Not, People do Fall for Them and Lose Their Money. Yet, back in the 1990’s, this is more or less what happened to Dundee Football Club. Were we nearly scammed? At the time, Dundee was owned by the flamboyant entrepreneur Ron Dixon, who was looking to sell the club and move on. Dixon wanted to sell the club to then vice-chairman Malcom Reid and manager Jim Duffy. An offer was made that would have seen 78% of the club move to a US-based wealthy Nigerian Prince, who was also a qualified gynaecologist. Yeah, the list of jokes is the length of your arm by now. Mr. Okehi (42), a former Nigeran international footballer, who also owned a local radio station and newspaper, wanted to acquire the club with a consortium of four other Nigerian friends. Advising Okehi, was Ron Duncan (65); a Dundonian ex-pat, lifelong supporter and Hilltown boy, who was based in Macon. Duncan, who coached semi-pro football in California and Georgia, would have run the club on the US based consortium on their behalf. “These guys would do a lot of good things, they would want to restore Dundee FC to the way it was under George Anderson and Bob Shankly, and the fact that they are based in America wouldn’t be a problem because I could get in touch (with) Obie, from Dundee” Said Duncan. Dixon even confirmed that there was an offer for the club from a Nigerian gentleman, but decided against the buy-out because it was his preferred option to sell to Reid and Duffy. Was the club nearly scammed by a consortium of Nigerian scammers, even way back then? Was this bid really serious or were the club being lined up to be royally f**ked by this Nigerian gynaecologist prince? I have read a few other sources who do verify that this story is true, and there was someone called Prince Obie Okehi who wanted to buy out the club. There is not a lot that Ron Dixon got right, but I think in this case he was most likely right not to go down this route. However, it would have been fun hearing the Derry singing “There is only one obie wan kanbe”. I’ll get ma coat!
