Yeah, whichever way the ref went he could have justified it. He could have tossed a coin to make that decision. Obviously there is huge pressure on refs at Parkhead and Ibrox, so the coin is a loaded one. The only worthwhile lesson is try to avoid these situations.

I think the problem Howley had in this instance is that he hasn’t actually made a challenge at all. I’m not sure how he avoids the contact, especially when you consider the speed it all happens at. I think Turnbull perhaps gets the credit here for drawing the foul and forcing the decision. He knows exactly what he is doing.
I’m not sure if it’s just me, but “shielding” seems to be more and more accepted as part of the game now. Most commonly when defenders let the ball run out for goal kick and block opponents from trying to keep it in. I don’t remember it being used much at all until probably last 10 years or so. Until then, players (like Turnbull in this case) would have been penalised for obstruction if their intention is to block a player instead of playing for the ball?

Looked to me like the Celtic player didn't go to play the ball but stepped across as he knew Dundee defender was committed to getting his toe to it.. I suppose pen.. but, wonder if it would have been give as a foul anywhere else on the pitch.. the young guy is only nineteen.. so easily suckered into making the challenge by the Celtic guy.. soft pen, softer than a Mr Whippee in a heat wave..

I think the player has went looking for the penalty. Does the touch on the leg stop the player? or has he felt the contact and went down.  Decisions like this will always go against teams who play the old firm.

Never a pen for me. Biggest and clearest point being no one is in control of the ball. Howley goes to play the ball. Turnbull doesn’t. Howley moves in a straight line towards the ball, Turnbull doesn’t, instead he moves towards Howley. Foul against Turnbull all day long for me. Stick this pish about shielding so is in possession in the sea

I'm not sure that Turnbull has to touch the ball for it to be regarded as a foul. You push a player in the middle of the park whilst the balls in the air, regardless of whether he's actually touched the ball or even going to get it, 9 times out of 10 it'll be given as a foul. Soft as sh*te but I really don't see, with VAR, how we could've escaped with any other outcome.

IMO that's a slightly different situation because the player is already between the defender and the ball, rather than making a move to position himself between the defender and the ball. But also because a push is clearly playing the man, whereas running towards the ball and not even breaking stride is not.

Howley played the man imo.

If it was at the other end of the pitch then I'd be expecting a penalty for us...... whether or not we would get it is another question!

Giving the referee a decision to make is never good in Glasgow especially the weak p**h ref's we have.

Exactly. The manager and players should have told him to be extra aware. He's never played the O/F before.

Then we'll have to agree to disagree Rev, I just don't see that. He only has eyes for the ball and doesn't change his stride to even attempt a tackle IMO. But we'll obviously never agree so can leave it at that.

To me he pokes a leg out in an attempt at stabbing the ball away and catches Turnbull on the heel. Pausing the action shows his outstretched leg and his foot making contact with the other player.
