I don’t think it’s a foul to be honest. Turnbull doesn’t have possession of the ball and Howley doesn’t even make a challenge. Howley is running to the ball, and Turnbull puts his leg in the way. No chance that’s a foul for me. If Turnbull takes a touch then Howley clips his heels, it’s a foul. But Turnbull isn’t in possession of the ball and initiates the contact. If that’s at the other end, Celtic get a foul. Also thought there was a foul on Robinson in the build up, but I haven’t seen it back. Looks like two players block him off from either side. Another one they would get, 100%.

I'm not sure that Turnbull has to touch the ball for it to be regarded as a foul. You push a player in the middle of the park whilst the balls in the air, regardless of whether he's actually touched the ball or even going to get it, 9 times out of 10 it'll be given as a foul. Soft as sh*te but I really don't see, with VAR, how we could've escaped with any other outcome.

Happens in the middle of the park we play on,never a penalty. Even if we got a pen for it I would saynthe same. Game is up the poley.

I agree but the laws of the game have changed to the extent that almost any contact inside the box resulting in a player hitting the deck is 9 times out of 10 deemed to be a penalty with VAR's intervention. 5 games in I'm relieved that VAR has only resulted in 1 debatable call (from our point of view) because I expected more tbh.

A penalty I'm afraid, although a soft one for the challenge.

Very disappointed in the lumbering Howley - he should be doing much better (doesn't look up to the pace yet  imo).

Unfortunately 100% a penalty

Howley lunged in and caught Turnbull in the box.

I appreciate that we all see things differently, but where do you see a lunge?!!?  Howley hasn’t broken his stride or even adjusted is posture in any way. I just see Turnbull putting his foot in the same spot where Howley’s foot is about to land and the inevitable contact is made. It there was a lunge then I would say it was made by Turnbull to shield the ball (him stretching his leg out is never an attempt to play the ball) and brought Howley down.

My take on the penalty is that both sides have a good case. All I would disagree with is that there's 100% certainty. This was a borderline decision. If you're looking at it from Howley's point of view he was going for the ball and Turnbull stuck his leg in the way, initiating a collision and bringing Howley down. From Turnbull's point of view Howley kicked him while he was shileding the ball. My instinct at the game was it wasn't a foul. My first reaction on seeing it on screen, when I was focussing on Turnbull, was that it was a foul, but on subsequent viewings, focussing on Howley, I decided it wasn't completely clear cut.
When the decision went to VAR it was always going to be a penalty. The decision about whether it was a foul was hardly a clear and obvious error. The VAR official, or a different ref, might have gone the other way, but his job was only to decide whether it was in the penalty area. I'm quite happy with that. The official on the pitch should be refereeing the game. The guy in some warehouse looking at the screen should only be helping out, not trying to overrule the match referee.
In other games we could have got away with it. It didn't pan out our way yesterday. Just accept it. Move on, and try not to give officials such tricky decisions to make in future.

Lunge or no lunge still a penalty.
